Flutter 3.41 is out: platform-specific assets and synchronous image decoding

What's new

  • Platform-specific assets. pubspec.yaml can say which platforms an asset is bundled for, so heavy desktop files stay out of mobile builds.
  • Synchronous decoding. decodeImageFromPixelsSync creates a texture and uses it in a shader in the same frame.
  • Embedding in native apps. A Flutter view now sizes itself to its content — previously the native parent had to fix its size.
  • iOS. Blur without color bleeding and a native drag handle for CupertinoSheet.

What to watch out for

  • The Flutter team asks not to move to Android Gradle Plugin 9 yet: plugins and apps using plugins on AGP 9 are not supported.
  • New plugin projects default to the Kotlin DSL for Gradle.
  • The full list is in the breaking changes section.

How to upgrade

  1. Review the breaking changes for every version you skipped.
  2. Update plugins and check them against the new version.
  3. Run regression tests on real iOS and Android devices before submitting to the stores.

We upgrade mobile apps built with Flutter: we will estimate how many versions you are behind and which libraries need replacing, and ship the update to the App Store and Google Play.
