Next.js 16.2 is out: faster dev startup, faster rendering and Adapters

What's new

  • Faster startup. According to the Next.js team, next dev starts about 87% faster than in 16.1.
  • Faster rendering. Server Components payload parsing is faster β€” the team measured 25–60% faster rendering to HTML depending on payload size.
  • Adapters are stable: platforms and custom pipelines can customize the build process.
  • Debugging: a redesigned 500 page, Server Function logs in the terminal, a clear hydration diff and next start --inspect for the production server.
  • ImageResponse is up to 20x faster for complex images, with Geist Sans as the default font.

What to watch out for

  • The default ImageResponse font changed from Noto Sans to Geist Sans β€” check how your OG images look.
  • New experimental features (unstable_catchError, prefetchInlining) are behind flags and don't affect existing apps.

How to upgrade

  1. Update the packages: npm install next@latest react@latest react-dom@latest, or automatically with the codemod from the upgrade guide.
  2. Review experimental flags in next.config and build warnings.
  3. Run the build and e2e tests and check key pages before rolling out.

We upgrade Next.js and React projects: we check compatibility, move to the new APIs and roll out without downtime for users.
