Magento 2.4.9 is out: what's new and who should upgrade now

On May 12, 2026 Adobe released Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.4.9, the newest version of the 2.4 line. Standard support for this release runs until May 31, 2029.

What's new in 2.4.9

  • PHP 8.5 and Symfony 7.4 LTS. The platform now officially runs on PHP 8.5, and the Symfony dependencies move to the long-term-support 7.4 branch.
  • A new stack. MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.8 and 12.3, OpenSearch 3 for search (Elasticsearch is no longer listed in the requirements), Valkey 9 for cache, RabbitMQ 4.3 for queues, nginx 1.30 and Composer 2.10.
  • 580 fixes in the core code.
  • Security. Admin users now need to set up only one two-factor authentication provider instead of every enabled one. CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA now protect the REST and GraphQL APIs as well.
  • GraphQL. The clearCart mutation is now available in Open Source, clearWishlist and exchangeExternalCustomerToken are added, and order totals get a grand_total_excl_tax field. A new admin setting controls how guest and customer carts are merged.
  • Braintree payments. Apple Pay in Chrome and Firefox, promo codes in Apple Pay and Google Pay Express, Pay Upon Invoice for German buyers, BLIK for Poland and ELO cards.

What to watch out for when upgrading

Moving to Symfony 7.4 changes type declarations and method signatures, so custom modules and third-party extensions that extend Symfony classes must be updated before the upgrade. The whole stack changes along with the platform — PHP, database, search and cache — so plan the upgrade as a small project rather than a single command.

Who should upgrade now

Standard support for Magento 2.4.6 ends on August 11, 2026 (Adobe Commerce customers get extended support until August 31, 2027), and for 2.4.7 on May 31, 2027. Without support a version stops receiving security fixes. If your store runs 2.4.6 or older, start the upgrade now; if it runs 2.4.7, plan the move.

What to do

  1. Check extensions and custom code for compatibility with PHP 8.5 and Symfony 7.4.
  2. Prepare the stack: MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.8+, OpenSearch 3, Valkey 9.
  3. Upgrade a copy of the store on a staging server and run regression tests.
  4. Roll the upgrade out to production during low traffic, with a rollback plan ready.

We have been working with Magento since 2015, from security patches to moving between versions. We will estimate the scope and upgrade your store through a staging environment, with no surprises in production.
